This is demonstrated in an earlier version of Preview where the editing tools button was the pen instead of the modern Toolbox icon, otherwise everything else is the same: The video below walks through the process of converting an image into a transparent version of itself, including cleaning up areas that were not immediately captured by the alpha tool using zoom.
Since you have to make manual adjustments with the alpha tool, this won’t work for a group of files, although you can batch convert them to PNG or GIF beforehand and then open them individually to make them transparent.
Check the box for “Alpha” to keep the transparency of the image, then save as usual with a. Go to File and select “Export”, then Option-click on the file format menu to display “GIF” as an option. Click and hold on the part of the image that you want to make transparent and move the cursor while still holding down up or down to select more or less of the image to be transparent – anything red becomes transparent. Select the “Instant Alpha” tool, which looks like a magic wand from the editing tools menu bar (in previous example versions, it is located under the Selection drop-down menu if the image is smaller than certain widths).
